4.1 Maths Week for Infant Classes and Junior Classes October 2020
Second Class embraced Maths Week once again this year. Our whole school Maths Fair was different this year, so class bubbles were kept separate. However every teacher was highly innovative and creative in their apporach towards Maths Week. Second Class played addition Bingo , Snakes and Ladders. They estimated and predicted how may sweets in each sweet jar. We had great fun learning about Shape using Tangrams. We took part in plenty of outdoor Maths based games. A great week was had by all.
4.1+ Maths Week, Day 1 : Junior quiz. Each team had 3 children
4.2 Baking (Weighing and Measuring)
Ms. Ann's junior pupils made some delicious Easter cupcakes. The pupils guessed ,measured, weighed using scales, portioned mixture into bun cases, cracked eggs, decorated cupcakes...the works !!
4.3 Measuring paper aeroplane flights
Tapping into the 4th class children's interest in building paper planes with a math lesson on measuring distances. To do this first all the children made their own plane, then with their partners they each too turns throwing, marking and measuring how far their planes flew and recording their results in their copy books. Some flew over 10m!
4.4 Fifth class integrated P. E. and Maths to compare themselves to Olympians
Fifth class compared themselve to Olympians in this month. We examined video footage of Usain Bolt's 9.81 (100m) world record sprint, Tianna Bartoletta's long jump (7.17 m), Michelle Carter's Shot Put (20.63 m) and Ryan Crouser's Men's Shot Put (22. 52m) . First we measured 100m using the trundle wheel then children ran as fast as they could to see how fast they could run a distance of 100m. Fitbits and stopwatches were used to time the athletes. Long Jumps were scored on grass.
Long Jump: The children measured 7.17 m to see how far Tianna Bartoletta jumped and then measured how far they could jump
We then practiced the technique of throwing used in Shot Put. The children threw bean bags to see the distance they could cover and compare their efforts with Michelle Carter's 20.63 m and Ryan Crouser's 22.52
Back in the class, the children recorded their best efforts and compared and calculated distances and percentages of an Olympian throw/ long jump and time they could reach.
4.5 6th Class: Rockets and remote Show and Tell
6th class designed and built a paper rocket. They explored different lengths and straws which would allow their rocket to travel furthest. We also discussed what could hinder the effectiveness of the rocket. After practicing different techniques, they then used a measuring tape to measure the distance travelled. All the class posted videos and distances on Seesaw
